"Remember remember the 5th of November"

The past few years I have gotten on Facebook and the quote "remember remember the 5th of November" is always posted somewhere.  I have never really understood why people put it up but thought it could be from a movie or something.  Well I was schooled yesterday by Zeke, a third grader, who informed me that 5 November is celebrated with bonfires and fireworks because of a man named Guy Fawkes.  This man was one of 13 conspirators who were out to kill the King.  It was said that these men dug tunnels under Parliament and carried barrels of gunpowder in so that they could essentially blow it all up on the 5th of November. This, however, was a failed attempt.  People are now encouraged to celebrate the King's escape with bonfires and fireworks.  So last night we did just that.  We went to a large bonfire and watched fireworks in celebration of the King's escape.  We went with the Nevin's family which was a lot of fun.  We all left feeling very cultured from this day.  Here are some pictures that Kristin took of the night.
